Credit Card Usage Tips

Gepost in: Credit Issues — @ 8:00 am

There are many advantages of using a credit card, such as the ability to make purchases online and book hotels and other travel arrangements. But remember this: the way you treat your credit card and make purchases should be taken seriously. If you think you can use your credit card uncontrollably you will find out soon enough that you are facing a lot of debt.

Anybody who carries a credit card can benefit from the following usage tips:

1. A credit card is nothing more than a loan – you have to pay back what you borrow. For this reason, you don’t want to bite off more than you can chew. In other words, only charge what you can comfortably afford to pay back when your statement comes due.

2. Keep track of every last dollar that you put on your credit card. This helps to do two things: 1. Make sure you are not going overboard and spending more than you can afford. 2. Avoid mistakes by your credit card company.

3. If possible, pay your credit card bill in full and on time. It goes without saying that you definitely want to pay on time. If you are late your credit card company will report this. In turn, your credit score will take a hit. While you only have to pay the minimum, if you get used to doing this you will begin to pay a lot of money in finance charges.

These three credit card usage tips are easy to follow. With so many benefits of carrying a credit card, you should definitely think about doing so. Just make sure you are being responsible at all times.

Student Credit Cards for Books and Emergencies

Gepost in: Credit Issues — @ 8:00 am

As a parent, you may be thinking about getting a credit card for your college age student. This may be your idea, or one that your child brought up. Either way, it is something to consider. Of course, you should only let this happen under certain stipulations. In other words, you don’t want to give a student a credit card and tell them to do what they want – this will end up in disaster.

Generally speaking, student credit cards can be beneficial if they are used for particular items such as books and emergencies. Every student needs to purchase books, and doing so with a credit card makes the process much easier. Along with this, it goes a long way in ensuring that your child has enough money to get what they need.

A credit card is also a great idea in case of an emergency. This can be used for anything from getting a tow to buying a plane ticket home on short notice. Sometimes, cash just isn’t good enough.

How are you going to govern purchases as a parent? The first thing you need to do is let your child know how big of a responsibility it is to carry a credit card. By educating them of the pros and cons, a lot of your parenting will be taken care of upfront. Of course, you can also have the statement mailed to your home to make sure that all purchases are within reason. Signing up for online account management will make this even easier.

A student credit card can be helpful if only used for certain purchases, such as books and emergencies.

How to keep Credit Card Debt Organized

Gepost in: Credit Issues — @ 8:00 am

Are you interested in keeping your credit card debt better organized? Many people have debt, but not all of them know what they are doing with it. If you are in a position where your credit card debt has taken over your life, it is time to get organized – no matter what it takes.

Here are three things you can do to organize your debt:

1. Know how many credit cards you have, as well as the balance on each one. This is simple to figure out if you only have one card. Of course, many people don’t carry just one.

2. Chart your debt instead of simply adding the balance of each card at the beginning or end of the month. The best way to do this is with a basic spreadsheet. This will help you stay organized, month after month, while also giving you a better idea of the progress that you are making.

3. Take advantage of online account management, if available. This is one of the best tips for keeping your debt organized. Almost every credit card company offers an online account manager. Are you setup with an online account? Or have you been avoiding this? Sure, paper statements still have a place but once you begin to use an online account you will find that you are more organized than ever before.

If you have credit card debt you need to stay as organized as possible. The three tips above should help you do just that.

Don’t rely on your Credit Card to Survive

Gepost in: Credit Issues — @ 8:00 am

What are you dong to make ends meet? Some people earn enough money to comfortably pay for any expense that comes their way. Others need to be more creative. Unfortunately, this often times leads to relying on a credit card to get by. Although there is nothing wrong with using plastic, you need to be careful of how often you do this.

Why are you relying on your credit card? This is the question that you need to start with. If you have enough money to pay your bill in full at the end of every month, you have nothing to worry about. In this case, you may be making out in the long run thanks to reward points.

Some people rely on a credit card to get by because they are not bringing in enough money to live. As you can imagine, this is when the problems begin. Your balance will grow month after month, and eventually it will get to a point where you have more debt than you can handle. Sure, you only “need” to pay the minimum but your balance will continue to increase due to finance charges. The last thing you want to do is rely solely on your credit card to make ends meet – this is a financial disaster waiting to happen.

There is a big difference between using your credit card and relying on it to survive. If you can comfortably payoff your balance every month, you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure you avoid situations in which you are turning to your credit card to get by.
